NYCO

NYCO's wollastonite is used in the manufacture of many ceramic applications iincluding:

Structural Clay Products
  • Brick
  • Sewer pipe
  • Roofing tile
  • Clay floor tile

Whitewares

  • Floor and wall tile
  • Sanitaryware
  • Electrical porcelain
  • Decorative ceramics
  • Dinnerware

Advanced Ceramics

  • Bioceramics
  • Structural zirconia and alumina substrates
  • Complex near net shapes

Benefits of Wollastonite in Ceramics

Wollastonite's unique chemical purity and acicularity (aspect-ratio) make it ideally suited to ceramic applications where shrinkage reduction, increased firing strength, gloss improvement and/or reduced surface defects in glazes is required.

Traditional Ceramics

  • Contributes CaO to glaze formulations without outgassing to improve glaze strength, surface finish and in the right quantity, produces more matte finish in low fired glazes
  • Improved green strength from acicular structure
  • Permits accelerated drying schedules
  • Maintains high brightness value during firing
  • Wollastonite has a low sintering temperature
  • Reduced moisture and expansion by improving drying rates
  • Reduced thermal expansion characteristics
  • NYCO's wollastonice typically has a LOI value of less than 0.5%. during firing, a minimum volume of gas is generated compared to other traditional materials, allowing a smooth surface with diminished pinholing.

 Advanced Ceramics

  • Fine particle size wollastonite (NYAD 5000) acts as a sintering aid which accelerates densification of alumina and zirconia
  • High aspect ratio wollastonite gives reinforcement to near net-shape green structures
